Before reading this book, I skimmed the reviews. Having already read a few of McCauley's books, I knew that he was capable of taking readers on wonderfully entertaining, clever and laugh out loud trips through the obstacle course known as middle age. Many reviewers gave this book a "so-so" but it's much better that. My Ex-Life was delicious, ironic and so damn funny. This book isn't as good but it's close enough. At least it was for me.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. McCauley's characters here earned more sympathy and interest(from me) than in some of his other works. The dialogue is often lightening fast and devastatingly witty. The best parts demanded to be read outloud to a long-suffering partner, who was nonetheless grateful that I forced the passages on him.My only problem with this otherwise fun novel was that it did not stand up to reflection after the last page. The denouement for the protagonist and his partner (Desmond and Russell) seemed a bit artificial, missing as it did, an important and logical dialogue that you would expect from long-term and loving intimates. It wasn't there and their rapproachment lacked credibility for it.
very good
Radosh is one of those former lefties who, like the prolific David Horowitz, had "second thoughts" about his communist upbringing and the political certainty it inculcated. He is loathed by academics and radical theorists to whom he is a turncoat of the worst order. But for a recovering victim of academic indoctrination this was a revelatory book, one of the best among many. This one names names, all the ones still assigned by professors of history, political science, women's studies, etc. in our major institutions of higher learning. They write their history with a Marxist bias so the US is always guilty, always criminally wrong; they care not about facts but about race, class, and gender. Thirty years of this has successfully fractured America's once proud melting pot. Intolerance has replaced the tolerance for which the country was meant to stand. Radosh gives the reader a view of the old, new, and leftover left from the inside early in the game. It's often very funny but, in the end, a sad commentary on the intellectuall quality of people who we all know as academic stars and political pundits. The key to his main theme is the chapter on the Rosesnbergs; many old lefties knew they were guilty but chose to stick to the lie for the "good of the party." This is the stuff of comtemporary politics--the truth has long been undervalued, deconstructed to the point of being inconsequential.
Excellent autobiography by a historian raised as a communist, who then converted and became a conservative.
Having been a Stephen fan since his first book, I enjoy how he improves with each book. (And I thought his first book was flawless!) This book dazzles with insight, humor, quirky yet true characterizations and a plot that will honestly surprise. I am enjoying the ride he is taking us on with his literary works.
The thing I like best about Stephen McCauley's work is that the characters all have their frailties, but somehow they also all have their lovable characteristics as well. And, as usual, the main character, through whose eyes much of the story is reflected, has initimable sarcastic wit. The supply of wisecracks, always suitable to the occasion, seems bottomless. This one would make a very interesting flick...
Great Book! Gives a good picture of why we're where we're at today in this country.... a cancer eating us out from inside.... Never has a country had such a movement from within so determined to bring it asunder. Only with the freedoms the constitution gave us could such a thing come about. Had things been as the commies wished or so often proclaim they would've ended up like dissenters in the USSR did.... dying in a Gulag or a shot behind the ear..... Good thing for them and the rest of us they didn't get their wish..... YET!
